Man O' War Gates

Bicentennial Park

Kable Avenue - Tamworth

These gates originally stood over the Man ‘O War steps at the Naval Jetty at Farm Cove, Sydney Harbour. The jetty was erected in colonial times by the Royal Navy as a landing place for ships’ crews and it also served Government House and Fort Macquarie at Bennelong Point. The Royal Australian Navy took over responsibility for the jetty in 1913.

For 150 years, the Man ‘O War steps served as a landing and embarkation point for Australian and British sailors, in both peacetime and in war. Through these gates, Officers and sailors of the Royal Australian Navy left to serve their country in the Boer War, World War 1, the Second World War, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam.

In the 1970’s, the Man ‘O War jetty was demolished to make way for the Sydney Opera House and the gates were sold by the demolisher. They passed through several hands until Mr. Graham Diamond, realizing their heritage value, bought them for $400.00. When he moved to the Tamworth district, Mr. Diamond brought the gates with him and when plans were afoot for the construction of the World War 11 Memorial, he offered them to the Tamworth Sub-Branch for inclusion in the development. The gates were dedicated as a memorial to the men and women of the Royal Australian Navy on Sunday 9th February 1997.

The gates were refurbished and erected on the ornate support structure constructed by the participants of the D.E.E.T. funded New Works Opportunities project here at No. 3. oval in 1996.

I ask that you take a moment to give thanks to the 2,215 Officers and sailors of the Royal Australian Navy who passed through these gates, never to return, and to the generations of Naval personnel who succeeded them.

As you pass through - Remember them.
