Gallipoli pine to be planted at Lincoln Grove service

April 14, 2017

A lone pine from Lone Pine will be planted as part of a special ANZAC service being held at the Lincoln Grove Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.

Every year the funeral directors of the cemetery hold a ceremony in the Last Post section of the grounds that is dedicated to returned service men and women.

As always former Army chaplain Tom Shanahan will lead the service, and will also take the lead role in the planting of the pine tree that is a direct descendent of the only tree that remained standing following the battle of Lone Pine on the Gallipoli peninsula.

Local nursery owner Peter Heemskerk left no stone unturned in sourcing the tree, which will be planted using holy water during the ceremony.

Organiser Margaret Tarbert said that the story of the Lone Pine tree is very special and therefore fitting to be planted in the Last Post garden.

“It is a magic place sitting here as the sun goes down during the service,” Mrs Tarbert said.

The service starts at 5.30pm on Thursday.
